In an inspiring initiative to encourage young girls to explore the world of mathematics, UCD Innovation Academy is thrilled to support Ireland’s Maths Superwomen, a campaign led by Dr. Christiana Pantelidou, UCD Research Fellow at the School of Mathematics and Statistics. Funded by The Royal Society and supported by University College Dublin, this project introduces 8-10-year-old children to the achievements of seven pioneering Irish female mathematicians.
Research shows that many girls form opinions on subjects like maths at a young age, often deciding by age 7 or 8 that it’s “not for them.” This campaign seeks to change that narrative, making maths more engaging and accessible for school-aged girls across Ireland, while demonstrating the many ways maths shapes our world, from daily life to groundbreaking discoveries.
The Ireland’s Maths Superwomen campaign features a bilingual, traveling poster exhibition that celebrates the achievements of Irish women in STEM. Available in both English and Irish, these posters highlight these women as role models, sparking curiosity and helping break down gender barriers in maths.
“Representation matters, and showing kids the diverse faces of mathematics helps them envision limitless possibilities.”
Dr. Christiana Pantelidou
To bring complex mathematical concepts to life, UCD Innovation Academy’s MakerSpace provided 3D-printed polytopes—geometric shapes essential to advanced mathematical study—that were used at the campaign’s launch in a Donegal school. These hands-on models allowed students to interact with maths in a tangible way, showing that the subject can be dynamic and fun.
“We were delighted to support this campaign, especially with the opportunity to use our MakerSpace technology to create something meaningful for young learners.”
Eleanor Kelly, Head of Strategy and Partnerships at UCD Innovation Academy
This initiative aligns perfectly with Science Week 2024, a national celebration from November 10-17 themed “regeneration,” which highlights how today’s decisions impact the next generation of learners.
