The UCD MSc in Design Thinking for Sustainability is designed to equip students with the hands-on, action-based learning experiences needed to drive change in the sustainability space. One of the key modules, Design for User-Centric, Sustainable Solutions (IA40610), challenges students to apply Design and Systems Thinking approaches to co-create, prototype, and test potentially viable sustainability solutions. Over the past months, they have worked closely with host company partners—acting as consultants—to address real-world sustainability challenges. Now, it’s time to make their ideas heard.

One week out from their Host Company Presentations, students participated in a pitch workshop led by Dragon’s Den Pitch Coach, Catherine Moonan. The session was designed to refine their ability to communicate complex sustainability challenges and innovative solutions with clarity, confidence, and impact. Moonan, author of Life’s A Pitch, shared expert strategies on how to deliver a compelling and memorable pitch.

The workshop provided invaluable insights into the elements of a compelling pitch. From posture and stage presence to tone of voice and eye contact, Moonan emphasised that delivery is just as crucial as content. Research shows that 55% of a pitch’s impact comes from body language, 38% from tone of voice, and only 7% from the actual words spoken.

Students were encouraged to:

  • Research their audience: Understanding the sustainability goals of their host companies allows for a tailored and resonant pitch.
  • Keep it simple: A clear, engaging story ensures their message is accessible to all in the room.
  • Focus on the pain point: “People pay more for painkillers than they will for vitamins” – highlighting the urgency of the problem makes solutions more compelling.
  • Develop an elevator pitch: Summarising their solution in five key words and five sound bites ensures they can articulate their idea succinctly, whether in a formal pitch or an impromptu conversation.

Host Companies: Real-World Challenges, Real-World Impact

This year, students are collaborating with a diverse group of organisations committed to sustainability, including:

  • Deloitte
  • Oxfam
  • Community Roots
  • Brennan and Co
  • Dogs Trust
  • Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland (SEAI)
  • Workhuman
  • STAND

Each team has been working closely with these companies to explore sustainability challenges and develop innovative solutions that have the potential for real-world impact. Next Monday, April 7th, they will present their final pitches—an opportunity to showcase their work and demonstrate how they are ready to transition into careers in the emerging green economy.
